Egg cups

Egg cups have been part of history for as long as there have been eggs. Archaeological digs have repeatedly unearthed proto-egg cups used by our ancestors in cities long forgotten. For instance, the destructive eruption of Mount Vesuvius in Italy in 79 AD laid waste to several cities - and yet, several centuries later, a silver egg cup holder was discovered almost 20 feet below dirt and volcanic ash in the ruins of Pompeii.

Today, egg cups have become an indispensable part of breakfast in many homes and restaurants for one simple reason – they can turn an otherwise simple breakfast into something novel and exciting.

What is an egg cup?

An egg cup, sometimes referred to as an egg server, is used to balance boiled eggs on the dining table. It comprises a sturdy base, known as a footie, and a concave torso which gently hugs an egg in position. The boiled egg (sometimes half boiled) is consumed by cracking open the shell on the top either by tapping it with a spoon or slicing it with a knife. The contents are then accessed using a spoon. You may also sprinkle some seasoning inside the opened egg.

What type of breakfast egg cups should you get?

Egg cups come in numerous shapes, sizes and designs. If you’re looking for something basic, Stelton’s Emma Egg Cups Set of 2 should fit your requirement. Made from glazed stoneware, the pair of eggcups have a lovely blue tone finish to give you a calm and organized feel.

For something a little more distinctive, consider Spode’s Blue Italian Egg Cup. The four-piece set is made from porcelain, and boasts a gorgeous painted scenery depicting the Italian countryside.

If you want to make a statement, though, there is probably nothing louder than Serax’s Peking Duck Foot egg. As the name implies, the egg cup is shaped like a webbed duck’s foot. It’s functional, it’s a talking point and it’s affordable - what more could you ask for?
