Toasters
The history of the toaster
In 1893, the first electric toaster was invented. The model was called Eclipse and was developed by the British company Crompton & Co. Its appearance and function were quite different from today’s toasters. Sixteen years later, the D12 model was introduced, which, like modern toasters, used heating elements to warm the bread, although you still had to turn it manually. The modern toaster was invented in 1919 by Charles Strite, who was tired of burnt toast. He added a timer that automatically switched off the toaster and popped the bread up.
The modern toaster
Today, toasters have been significantly modernised. Most models come with multiple settings and functions. For example, you can often defrost frozen bread or keep it warm using a “stay warm” function. In addition, many toasters include a rack that sits on top, used to warm bread without toasting it.
