What is a plafond?

A plafond is a low, often round lamp, placed right by the ceiling or a wall. Taking up minimal space height-wise, plafond lamps are ideal for small surfaces and rooms with low ceilings. Compared to spotlights and other flush-mounted lamps, plafonds are very easy to mount and replace. Plafonds are great for hallways and dressing rooms when you want to leave the path of the door unobstructed, but they also work well in children's rooms and bedrooms where you want to avoid hanging ceiling lamps.

Plafonds are shaped to occupy less space than traditional ceiling or wall lamps, but in addition to the sheer function it is of course also important that the lamp be decorative and go hand in hand with the other décor in the room. In many cases plafonds might be considered something of a bland lighting solution, but the fact is that nowadays the variety of options is much larger than before. We also carry LED plafonds compatible with LED light sources for reduced energy consumption; that way you do not have to worry about the lamp heating up.

Which plafond should I choose?

You should choose your plafond based on its intended purpose. As a rule, plafonds give good universal lighting, making them a great pick for the main lamp of the room – but no rule is without exception. The feel of the light naturally depends on your choice of light source and on whether or not the lamp is dimmable. The mood also changes based on the material of the plafond: glass, metal, or fabric. Consider what kind of feeling you want the lamp to create and then complement it with point lighting, such as wall lamps, pendulum lamps, or floor lamps, to get just the right mood.
