Design heritage of Royal Copenhagen

The company’s original design was heavily influenced by two factors – the admiration for porcelain products imported from China and the discovery of a rich deposit of cobalt in neighboring Norway (which at the time was part of the Danish geostate, the remnants of the Kalmar Union).

This led to the design and subsequent production of porcelain products with the iconic Musselmalet (Blue Fluted) painting. Although the quality of material, manufacturing and design have grown by leaps and bounds since then, the company’s ethos of respect for tradition, renewal and innovation remains unchanged. The continued popularity of Royal Copenhagen collectibles, particularly the annual lineup of
