What is a cake plate?

A cake plate is a platter for cakes. Yes, you can probably squeeze your cake onto ordinary plates. However, you run the risk of breaking or smudging the sides, or even having them topple over. A cake plate also gives your cake an aesthetic boost, making it look more elegant, and dare we say, more appetizing!

Types of cake plates

Cake plates come in all shapes and sizes, and they are also sometimes called cake stands or cake boards. The most common type of cake stand is the single-tier plates that are reserved for basic cakes and informal events. They sometimes come with lids. At home, you will typically find these elegant cake serving stands on the kitchen counter. 

The second type is the two-tier stands. As the name implies, they support two layers of cakes. Depending on the variant, the cakes may be connected, touching, or separated by a gap.

The third variety is the three-tier stands. These are typically used for weddings, anniversaries and special events. These stands provide support for large, sophisticatedly designed cakes.

Cake stands are made from a variety of materials including plastic, ceramic, glass, and stainless steel.
