Scandinavian home décor trends 2022

Simple, functional, stylish, and minimalistic – Scandinavian home décor gives your eyes both joy and peace. In this article we'll list the hottest home décor trends of 2022; soon you'll be decorating like a true Scandinavian!

Last year we saw sober, calm colours and soft shapes dominate the world of home décor. This natural decorating style goes on in 2022, but with little visits from perky pastels and influences from the 70s, 80s, and 90s.

Softly flowing shapes, bright shades of wood, coloured glass, ceramics, and quilted textiles are some of the trends we'll be seeing more of this year. We've listed the great material, colour, and shape trends of 2022 right here.

Colours

2022 is the year colour climbs back on the centre stage. After many years of mild, tactile trend colours we are seeing more and more steps taken towards a more flamboyant direction. But don't rush to change every item you have at home – keep your calm base of brown, beige, and burnt earthy tones, and add dashes and details of colour to your home décor. Orange, light yellow, different shades of blue, green, and brown are surging in popularity, but this year's clearest trend colour is purple – especially tranquil, pastel-like shades of lavender.

Patterns & shapes

We are spending more time at home than ever, which might be one of the reasons we want to decorate rather simply – we want to be surrounded by things that soothe us and let our eyes rest. Flowing, organic forms are a trend making a comeback in both furniture and decorative vases and candle-holders, for example. Mirrors, too, are shape-shifting and rejecting the beaten path; read more about the year's trendiest mirrors here. We are leaving function behind and giving details space as sculptures where the smooth shapes hint at soft, quiet motion.

Patterns are not at all extreme or eye-catching right now; they, too, lend home décor a sense of peace and quiet. Stripes and squares are ever popular, and 80s-style quilted textiles are back in. In 2022 we will be seeing quilted pillows, plaids, and bed spreads.

Material

As for materials, natural ingredients remain in the spotlight. White stained oak is a material we saw bloom in home décor last year, especially combined with contrasting colours like black or dark green. Rattan and soft materials like teddy fur and velour also look like they will stay in in 2022.

We will also see lots of coloured glass. We are giving big glass vases and candle holders more space, like sculptures on shelves and sideboards.

Sustainability & function

Reusing has been popular for several years now, and it remains at the trend helm in 2022. Worn colours and aged items have never been so popular, with yesterday's well-served functional items becoming beautiful interior details. Many important suppliers are also finding ways to incorporate reusing in their factories; waste pieces of wood and other materials are given new life as fresh, unique items.

In this day and age when we all spend more time at home than ever, objects and spaces need to fulfil more than just one function. Many of us do homework at the dining table or jury-rig a home office in the bedroom. That's why we think many of the upcoming trends of 2022 will involve smart, multifunctional solutions that let us get the absolute maximum out of our homes.
